Pacha was born in captivity in the spring of 2006 as a falcon hybrid, a unique cross between a Gyr falcon and a Peregrine falcon. One of the main reasons for creating such a gyr peregrine hybrid for falconry is to combine the best traits of both species into one bird.
The Gyr falcon is known as the largest falcon, and its hunting method involves direct pursuit, showcasing incredible endurance during the chase. However, a notable disadvantage of this species is its susceptibility to warmer weather due to its arctic origins. This can lead to fatigue or stress, which may trigger a respiratory problem called Aspergillosis that can be fatal for these falcons.
In contrast, the peregrine falcon thrives in warmer climates and is less prone to this specific illness. They naturally hunt their prey by diving from great heights, making them exceptional hunters.
The hybrid characteristics of Pacha take on the larger size of the gyrfalcon, enabling it to handle bigger prey while also being more resilient to stress and warmer weather conditions.
Pacha served as a falconry bird for over 5 years before transitioning to bird control in Cherry farms for 3 years, after which he was recruited at the school. Pacha is known for being a very aggressive falcon towards quarry, which is why we selected him for our hunts.
